It took a while but Warner Bros. FINALLY realized – hey, there might not be 2 million fans of ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS but if a couple thousand want a copy, they’ll pay upfront for it, press one DVD and print some artwork on it – $19.95 – more than they normally make at wholesale for a regular store DVD (@$12.00).

Of course, there aren’t really any obvious titles that leap out at you but that’s the point. Most studios have only released about 25% (or less) of all the films they own … But a perfect example, ONE TRICK PONY, the Paul Simon semi-autobiography film. Not a great film but the music was pretty good and there are clearly lots of Paul Simon fans who might want the DVD but of course, stores are not exactly rushing to stock a DVD starring a 60-year musician in a middling movie who can’t really act – but online on demand is perfect.
There are some nice Cary Grant comedies (DREAM WIFE) but also some early 1970′s films. The newest film might be Rob Lowe’s OXFORD BLUES. Again, perfect for this because I’m sure there are 10,000 out there who think OXFORD BLUES is the greatest film ever made
What’s nice is that most have a preview clip or a trailer – such as the one here from SWEET NOVEMBER and you’ll notice, they did not just grab some 35mm reels and transfer it to DVD – it looks sharp and clean, very nice WB!
I think there are less than 200 choices now but I’m sure they’ll be adding more soon – other than the fact the categories are not very accurate (film fans will want to look at every category to be sure they’re not missing anything) and while each film seems to have a sharp resolution trailer or preview, the film description text box is often empty … and there is way too many popups in the design of the site but still – a nice addition and I’ll definitely look forward to seeing new titles.
Of course there are other on-demand DVD Film distributors already such as IndieFlix.
